NEW RICHMOND, W.Va. – The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans went down 4-0 in the first inning, did not panic and scored the games next 13 runs to defeat the Wyoming East Lady Warriors on Thursday, March 30, on the road.
Taylor Boswell continued her scintillating play and went 4-4 with two doubles, a single and an exclamation point home, run as East improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Spartans put Lilly Carola on the mound in this one, and she got off to a rather rough start. The first five Warrior batters reached base, including a big three-run home run from Savannah Brehm, and Carola looked rattled. But it did not take her long to settle down and start throwing like she is capable of doing. She did a complete 180 and retired 19 consecutive batters, before a single ended that streak in the bottom of the seventh.
East stole all the momentum in the third when Wyoming East struggled to make a simple defensive play. They made three errors in the inning, and the Spartans got three runs off of them as East cut the deficit to 4-3 after three innings.
They took the lead for good in the fourth on a Lindsey Black RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Carola.
The Spartans never looked back.
The three-run homer by Boswell put a final nail in the Warriors’ coffin, as the Spartans headed back home with smiles on their faces.
After Boswell, Alanis McClary (2-4, 2 runs, RBI) and Black (2–5, run, 2 RBIs) had multiple hits. Jenna Groves had 2 RBIs, and McClary, Josi Ervin, Boswell, Carola and Hailey Ervin all scored two runs each.
Carola went the full seven innings on the mound. She allowed just five hits and struck out seven.
The Spartans will head to Myrtle Beach from April 3-5 for a tournament in the Palmetto State.
