Please, help Greenbrier East High School celebrate National FFA Week Feb. 18-25. This is a time when FFA members and community can recognize the impact that FFA has on students and community. The 120 members of Greenbrier East FFA have planned a week full of activities which help students and the community understand how agriculture impacts everyone’s lives.
Below is a list of events both at GEHS and in the community.
Monday, Feb. 20 – Students have the opportunity to help officers decorate the halls and agricultural education classrooms of Greenbrier East High School for National FFA Week from 1-3 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 21 – FFA members with a valid driver’s license and community members are invited to participate in East’s “tractorcade.” Those who are interested in participating will meet at the Lewisburg Walmart Parking lot at 8 a.m. Police will escort drivers down Rt. 219 South to Greenbrier East High School in order to celebrate FFA and Greenbrier County agriculture.
During students’ lunches, they will be able to participate in “Down on the Farm’’ events which will include milk chugging, milking simulation and a roping simulation. This day also starts FFA’s fundraiser for the week, Kiss the Pig. On Friday, the teacher with the most votes (money donated) will have to kiss a pig.
Wednesday, Feb. 22 – This day is used to thank the teachers for supporting FFA, its members and advisors. The GEHS chapter will serve the staff of Greenbrier East with cherry pie and ice cream. They serve cherry pie to honor George Washington, as he is known for cutting down a cherry tree. Washington was a prolific agricultural producer and taught future farmers that accurate record keeping is extremely important.
Thursday, Feb. 23 – During lunches, students get the opportunity to participate in agricultural Olympics. Events include butter sculpting, hungry hippos and barrel racing, giving students the chance to learn different parts of the agriculture industry.
Friday, Feb. 24 – Kiss the Pig fundraiser will be held during students’ lunches along with East’s FFA chapter’s petting zoo. At the petting zoo, students will be able to see animals from agriculture classes along with learning more about the different classes East offers, including agriculture mechanics, animal science, natural resources and plant science.
