LEWISBURG (WVDN) – Earlier this season, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans beat Hedgesville 60-22 at home, cruising through them easily.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, East traveled to Hedgesville, and although the Eagles played better, the Spartans still had a relatively easy time in a 62-33 victory.

East led 25-16 at halftime but got on track in the second half.

East put four players in double figures as Cadence and Kennedy Stewart led the way with 16 points each. Mackenna McClure chipped in 11 and Caroline Dotson netted 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Spartans went back on the road on Thursday, Feb. 16 and beat the Moorefield Yellow Jackets 72-54.

In a game that was back-and-forth and pretty competitive early, it was the Spartans that had a dominant third quarter that propelled them to the victory.

Cadence Stewart has been on a roll lately and came out firing again against the Yellow Jackets. She hit two threes in the first 2:30 of the game, then knocked in her third late in the first quarter as East led 16-13 after one.

Kennedy Stewart and Ryan White each connected on a deep ball, then Cadence Stewart hit a runner in the lane that put East up 24-17. A conventional 3-point play from Kennedy Stewart and another triple from Cadence Stewart put East up 38-22 at the break.

Kennedy Stewart hit two quick 3s to open the second half, and that set the tone for the rest of the game.

Cadence Stewart went over 1,500 points for her career, just one of two East players ever to do that. She finished with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kennedy Stewart scored 19 points and had six boards. McClure added 10 points.

The Spartans hit 15 3s and shot 46% from that range.

East (13-7) returns home for their regular season finale against Chapmanville this Saturday, Feb. 18. That will also be senior night, or as it is being called, Cadence Stewart Night, as she is the only 12th grader on the team.
