FAIRLEA- For the third year in a row, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans are heading to Charleston.

Only this time, they are the favorite to hoist a state championship trophy.

East defeated the Nicholas County Lady Grizzlies 66-42 on Tuesday night, March 3 to claim one of the Region III championships and moved to 24-0 in the process. Kennedy Stewart scored 19 points, dished out 6 assists, and had 5 rebounds and 4 steals to lead the way for the Lady Spartans. Junior guard Ava Workman added 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Finally, Mackenna McClure scored 12 points and had 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

The Spartans jumped out to a 30-2 lead to start the game and emptied their bench midway through the third quarter.

After the victory, each player climbed the ladder and cut a piece of the net down to keep for themselves.

Greenbrier East was pegged the number one overall seed in Class AAA for next week’s state tournament in Charleston. They will face the Hampshire Lady Trojans on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:30 PM. The Trojans are 15-8 this season and are currently on a short 3-game winning streak.

Look for a preview of that contest over the next couple days.
