1923 – 100 Years
Ago Growing
The West Virginia University now has an enrollment approaching the 3,000 mark and, under present indications, gives promise of an enrollment of between 6,000 and 7,000 in the near future.
Opens Tanyard
Edgar L. Smith has established an old-time Pocahontas home industry in opening a tanyard at his farm near Seebert, Pocahontas County. He is a tanner by trade as his ancestors were before him. His specialty is tanning sheep and other hides for rugs. Mr. Smith says so little care is taken with hides, that few of them that come into his hands are fit to be made into rugs. Most of them are badly skinned, poorly kept and improperly salted and cured.
Flu Epidemic
There is at present an epidemic of flu generally over the county. Many of the schools in various parts of the county are reported temporarily closed. While the disease is of a mild form, there are many sick. It seems to be most prevalent in and near Williamsburg.

New Fair Secretary
Thomas Sydenstricker of Lewisburg has been named secretary of the State Fair of West Virginia, succeeding his brother, Robert T. Sydenstricker, who resigned. They are the sons of the fair’s first president, the late John B. Sydenstricker.

Hoping the rumors are wrong that parking meters will be installed in Ronceverte, Martin & Jones wants it clearly understood they are against any form of parking meter system until all methods of correcting Ronceverte’s parking problem have failed.
1973 – 50 Years Ago
Resort Man
of The Year
Resort Management Magazine selected Truman E. Wright as The Resort Man of The Year. Wright is president and executive director of The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs. Mr. Wright began his career at The Greenbrier in 1951 as resident manager; then, in 1954, he was named vice president. In August of 1971, he was elected to the presidency.
Nixon Group Is Charged
Naming a defendant in the Watergate bugging trial as a participant, the Justice Department has charged President Nixon’s campaign finance committee with criminally violating the nine-month-old federal election campaign law.
Autotrains Seen

Highspeed autotrains and electric urban cars may be the way to increase the number of private automobiles and travel in the United States in face of a feared “energy crisis.”

Honored by Marshall University
Marshall University recently honored outstanding black high school students throughout the tri-state region during a weekend of activities to recognize the students for their accomplishments and talents. Outstanding students from Greenbrier East who took part in the activities are Ashewanta T. Allen and Denise N. Lewis.
Plant Expansion Could Bring 200 Jobs To Greenbrier County
Over 200 manufacturing jobs could be on their way to Greenbrier County thanks to an agreement signed in Taiwan this week. Officials with CEL Technology Inc. announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding with Pa-Yih, the world’s third largest manufacturer of automobile lighting. CEL Technology is based in Lewisburg. Former astronaut Joe McBride is chairman of the corporation.
