Melvin Jewel Dixon, 86, of Alvon, WV, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016, in the Beckley Veterans Medical Center in Beckley, WV, after an extended illness.
Born May 13, 1929, in White Sulphur Springs, WV, he was a son of Lawrence Wyatt and Oatie Marie Kincaid Dixon.
Melvin was a farmer, a mechanic for C.W. Lewis Inc. in White Sulphur Springs for 14 years, cut timber, and had his own sawmill on his farm. He liked to bowl, shoot pool, and ride his motorcycle as much as possible.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Daphine Gwinn Dixon in 2000; and one brother, James Dixon.
Survivors include a son, Sonny J. Dixon (Brenda) of North Matewan, WV; one grandson, Matthew Jewel Dixon (Ashley) of Chattaroy, WV; one granddaughter, Courtney Wells (Josh) of Winchester, KY; two great-grandsons, Mattox Jewel Dixon and Axston Wayne Dixon; two great-granddaughters, Emerson Wells and Piper Wells; two sisters, Edith Bostic of White Sulphur Springs and Betty Hepler of Nokesville, VA; and many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at the Alvon United Methodist Church in Alvon, WV, with the Rev. Bobby McClintic officiating. Burial will follow in the Vandal-Gwinn Cemetery, Meadow Bridge, WV.
Visitation will be at the church on Saturday, May 21, from 6-9 PM.
