Virginia Belle O’Neill Smith, 90, of Pickaway, WV, won her battle with Alzheimer’s disease at Springfield Center on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

She was born April 21, 1926, at Hillsdale, WV, a daughter of William Franklin and Hattie Gaye Beamer O’Neill.

Virginia Belle O’Neill Smith, 90, of Pickaway, WV, won her battle with Alzheimer’s disease at Springfield Center on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

She was born April 21, 1926, at Hillsdale, WV, a daughter of William Franklin and Hattie Gaye Beamer O’Neill.

Mrs. Smith was a retired unit secretary in the X-ray department at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, OH. She was also a secretary for Longanacre Funeral Home and was a 1944 graduate of Union High School in Union, WV. After graduation, she boarded a train and traveled to Washington, D.C., to a job with the FBI during World War II. She was a member of the Union Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hillard “Smithy” Smith; a son, Timothy Hillard Smith; three grandchildren, Lannie Virginia Young, Richard Hillard Allen, and Robert Anthony Smith; two sisters, Mary Marshall Paschall and Anna Frances Cole; a brother, John William O’Neill; and three sons-in-law, Paul Wickline, Gene Young, and Keith Weikle.

Surviving are four daughters, Kathleen Smith Schmidt and husband, Dave, of Union, Ella Smith Wickline of Ronceverte, WV, Gladys Smith Young of Union, and Deborah Virginia Smith Weikle of Sinks Grove, WV; a son, Bobby Smith of Stow, OH; six brothers and sisters, Louise Sparks of Sinks Grove, Jane Brisker of Minford, OH, Marian Collins of Greenville, WV, Willia Gray Kanode and husband, Junior, of Lindside, WV, Oren O’Neill of Lindside, and Dorothy Lee Cole of Lindside; 12 grandchildren, Kim Eldridge, Kay Clatts, Karen, Keith, and Scottie Scott, Steven Smith, Jimmy Helffinger, Philip “Flip” Brooks, Candy Sabol, Annie Boggs, Jenifer McCraw, and Hattie “Sis” Allen; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Groves Funeral Home in Union with Pastor Gene Fullen and the Rev. Mike Smith officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:30 AM until time of the service.
