Stella Elizabeth Butler, 68, of Ronceverte, WV, died Sunday morning, February 14, 2016, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, WV, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Ronceverte to Thomas and Mildred McClung Butler, who preceded her in death.
She attended Virginia Intermont Art College in Bristol, VA, and graduated from Concord College in 1969 with a degree in education. After her graduation, she set up the art program at Greenbrier East High School in Fairlea, WV, where she taught and mentored many students for 25 years.
She was involved in many art programs in both the county and in the state, as well as her hometown of Ronceverte.
Ms. Butler chaperoned students to numerous European countries, where cultural events and ethnic cuisine were enjoyed. She especially enjoyed visits to London and New York City. Her passions were art, history, and good food. She was past president of the Ronceverte Woman’s Club.
She is survived by first cousins, Virginia Butler Blake of Ronceverte, Sarah Estes of Fredericksburg, VA, Jean Ingleby of Ashland, VA, Nancy Arnett of Indialantic, FL, Bruce McClung of North Carolina, and Lee McClung of Princeton, WV; many other cousins; and a special friend, Nancy Greenlea, and her daughter, Cora Greenlea, formerly of Ronceverte.
Funeral services will be held at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 2 PM with the Revs. Betsy Walker and Dave Stilgenbauer officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.
Pallbearers will be former students, including Matt Landers, Eddie Booze, Chris White, and Davis Musser. Honorary pallbearers will be William Blake, Troy Boswell, Brad Boswell, Claude Massie, and Bill Sturgell.
Ms. Butler loved flowers, but donations of sympathy may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society and/or the Salvation Army.
