John Gordon Lee, 97, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2016, at Runk & Pratt Liberty Ridge.
He was the loving husband of Danise R. Hanes Lee. John and Danise were high school sweethearts who were blessed to find each other again later in life and were married October 11, 1997. He wanted at least five good years with the love of his life, and they were blessed with 18 wonderful years.
Born October 9, 1918, in Ronceverte, WV, he was the son of the late William Gordon Lee and Ghaski Jefferies Lee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Blair Lee; and a sister, Alyce Lowe.
John proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was of the Episcopal faith. He attended Texas A&M University and West Virginia University and was a retired manager of Raleigh Ready Mix and Asphalt Inc. He was the past West Virginia State Director of The National Asphalt Paving Association, one of the organizers of All Souls Episcopal Church in Daniels, WV. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #77, Scottish Rites, York Rite, and was a Shriner. He loved gardening, bird watching, storytelling, and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory three children, Dr. Alyce R. Lee of Beckley, WV, Ghaski Browning and husband, Preston, of Charleston, WV, and Gordon Blair Lee and wife, Mary Beth, of Beckley; two stepchildren, Carol Cottrell Wright and husband, Michael, of Richmond, VA, and George A. Cottrell and wife, Nancy, of Sun City Center, FL; and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of John’s life and faith will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at Runk & Pratt Liberty Ridge by Pastor Wayne Wingfield. Burial with Masonic rites will take place in the Ronceverte Riverside Cemetery in Ronceverte at a later date.
The family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Runk & Pratt at Liberty Ridge, Seven Hills Hospice, and Centra Lynchburg General Hospital for their living care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of John Lee to Seven Hills Hospice, Shriners’ Children’s Hospital, or your local Masonic Lodge.
