WEST VIRGINIA (WVDN) – The West Virginia Gold Rush event is in its final days. This event, in its ninth year, runs from March 30 to April 11. This angler’s event offers all ages a chance to catch golden rainbow trout and win prizes.

With 69 lakes and streams stocked for the Gold Rush, there are plenty of opportunities to catch a prize-winning golden rainbow trout. Anglers are encouraged to fish multiple stocking locations to increase their chances of a golden tagged catch and a prize.

Be patient when fishing for the golden rainbow trout. Their unusual coloration means they seek shaded, cooler water and may be less active. The reward of a golden catch and a potential prize makes the challenge well worth the effort.

Plan your trip to maximize time on the water. Stocking events can bring larger crowds; early morning is recommended for calmer waters and less crowded. Many lakes and streams have designated public access with limited parking.

Out of 50,000 golden rainbow trout stocked for the event, only 100 will carry a numbered tag. If you’re lucky enough to catch one, submit the tag number at WVdnr.gov/gold-rush-giveaway for a chance to win one of the following prizes: one West Virginia Resident Lifetime Fishing License for the winner, a one-night stay at a West Virginia State Park Lodge awarded to five winners, and a $25 West Virginia State Parks Gift Card awarded to five winners.

Prizes are picked by a drawing. Anglers with a valid fishing license and trout stamp who report a verified tagged fish are also eligible to receive a Gold Rush merchandise gift bag.

West Virginia State Parks are offering a 15% discount on lodge rooms and cabins at select parks booked between now and April 30 as a promotion for the Gold Rush event. The offer applies only to new stays minimum of two nights required. Parks included in this discount are Blackwater Falls, Cacapon Resort, Cass, North Bend, Pipestem Resort, Tygart Lake, and Watoga State Parks. To redeem this discount, you will need to book online at WVstateparks.com and enter the code GOLD at checkout.

Why not make this event an outdoor adventure across West Virginia? Get out and explore the state’s lakes, streams, and forests while angling for that golden rainbow trout, and enjoy the spring air. Whether you’re fishing, paddling, hiking, or camping, West Virginia’s outdoors offer something for everyone. The scenic views make memories that last a lifetime. Best of luck on snagging a prize-winning golden rainbow trout!
