Good Advice
“To be good citizens you should read the newspapers and bring your children up to read the newspapers, so that you will know what is going on,” was the advice given by Justice Selah B. Strong, to 100 men and women wo were made citizens in the supreme court in New York.
Four Sons In The Navy
The United States Navy Department advises Mr. B. C. Johnson of Ronceverte, that their statistical bureau has no records as to the number of families having four sons serving in the Navy, but it believes it is very few. The Johnson family, whose record is a follows at the present time: Henry G. Johnson, eight years in the service; Russell P. Johnson, five years in service; Harold A. Johnson, three years in service; and Sam P. Johnson is serving his second year in the Navy, now on the battleship “Utah.”
Under Civil Service
Many persons in the vicinity of Alderson are seeking information as to how to obtain employment at the new women’s Federal prison now being built there. Dr. Mary B. Harris, superintendent of the prison, says there will be no guards with the exception of two night watchmen who will be expected to patrol the grounds. The clerical position and out-of-door supervisory positions all are to be filled by women, and all under civil service appointment. Dr. Harris says that the position of farm manager will be filled by a woman.

Lt. Morgan Flies 129 Missions
Flying at tree level, spying out enemy positions and acting as clay pigeons for ground fire so that gun emplacements would reveal themselves, is all part of the T-6 (Mos quito Squadron) pilots’ day. One of the pilots from the famous squadron who distinguished himself by flying 129 missions against the red serpent in Korea was 1 st Lt. Don A. Morgan of Caldwell. For his flights and action against the enemy the Lieutenant was recently awarded the ninth Oak Leaf cluster to the air medal.
Paper At Alderson
Alderson’s first newspaper since 1938 made its appearance last week. The tabloid weekly, “The Alderson Times,” is published by Charles J. Eib and edited by John R. Kennedy, who came to Alderson from Marlinton to supervise the enterprise.
Greenbrier County Farms
According to figures just released by the U. S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census, there are 2,474 farms in Greenbrier County as compared to 2,721 in 1925, with 42.4 per cent of the county being in farms.

The Greenbrier Gets Five-Star Award
The Greenbrier is “one of the best resorts in the country” as recognized by the 1976 Mobil Travel Guide just published. The resort has received the prestigious Five-Star Award, the highest rating Mobile Travel Guide bestows. This year in all America only nine resorts received this coveted rating.
Three Selected For Competiton
Three members of the Class of 1976 at Greenbrier East High School has been selected as finalists in the 1976 National Meri Scholarship competition, according to Paris Hume, principal at Greenbrier East. Those who earned this high honor and continue to be eligible for various college scholarships are
George E. Cook, Timorthy D. O’Brien, and Thor Tangvaid.
Carter And Ford The Big Winners
Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford were the big winners in Florida. They talked like winners. George Wallace and Ronald Reagan were the big losers. They talked like winners, too. Scoop Jackson was a winner-looser. He talked like one . Reagan and Wallace said Florida wasn’t a typical Southern state and downgraded the importance of the primary.

Lady Mavs To Meet Tolsia In State Tournament
For the first time in the history of girls’ basketball at James Monroe High School, a Lady Mavericks team is heading to the state tournament. They Lady Mavs won their way into the tourney with a 43-41 victory over the Summers County Bobcats to take the Region VI championship.
Bluegrass Performance Kicks Off GVT’s Spring Music Series
Spring is in the air and so is the sound of great new music at Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT). A wide variety of musical styles will be showcased during GVT’s Spring Music Series, among them, bluegrass, swing, and jazz. Kicking off GVT’s music series is Richard Hefner’s band, The Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys.
Band To Perform At Pearl Harbor
The Greenbrier East High School Spartan Marching Band will represent West Virginia and the Battleship USS West Virginia at the 60 th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Only one high school band was selected from each state that had a battleship at Pearl Harbor during the attack. Fund raising efforts are underway to raise the needed $140,000 for the trip. Ted J. Kleisner, president and managing director of The Greenbrier, recently presented a check for $5,000 to assist in this effort to Spartan band members Ryan Wheeler and Ashley Spinks and and Senator Mark Burnette (right).
