CHARLESTON W.Va. (WVDN) – The Public Service Commission of West Virginia on Friday received an application from Monongahela Power Company and The Potomac Edison Company seeking approval to construct and operate a 1,200-MW combined cycle natural gas plant and three 70-MW solar generation facilities.
The proposed $2.84 billion gas facility would be built at the existing Fort Martin Power Station in Monongalia County. If approved, the plant is projected to begin operating in late 2031. Construction is estimated to generate approximately $258.5 million in tax revenue, with the facility expected to contribute $51.1K annually thereafter.
The solar projects would be developed at the Wylie Ridge site in Weirton, the Davis site in Davis, and the Valley Point site near Albright. The companies project that those facilities would begin operating in 2027, 2028, and 2030.
According to the filing, the companies state the combined projects are intended to address energy deficits and reduce potential capacity shortfalls while supporting reliable electric service.
