Dorothy Mae Alderman, GySgt. USMC (Ret)
Dorothy Mae Alderman, GySgt. USMC (Ret), age 96, of South Charleston, WV, passed away on January 31, 2026, at her home.
She was born September 12, 1929, in Alvon, WV, and was the daughter of the late Mitchell S. and Jessie E. Hoylman Alderman.
Miss Alderman was of the American Baptist Faith. She was retired from the United States Marine Corp with 20 years of service. After her retirement from the Marine Corp, she owned and operated Alderman’s Optical in South Charleston and Alderman’s Uniform Shop. Dorothy was a long time member of the Bethel Baptist Church, Women Marine Association, Marine Corps League, and was a reporter and photographer for the Marine Corp newspaper, and had been a Marine Corp recruiter in most of West Virginia.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Kathleen Alderman, Freda Wade (James O.), Olga Wade (Ivan), and Mabel Hardiman (Ralph); brothers, Kermit, Kenton, and Mason Alderman.
Surviving are her brother, Charles Dale Alderman; sister-in-law, Barbara Alderman; nieces, Brenda Kees, Deborah Tyree, and Kay Alderman; nephews, Bill Hardiman, Doyle Wade, Ike Wade, Steve Wade, Michael Alderman, Jeff Alderman, and Larry Alderman.
Funeral services for Miss Alderman will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, 175 Mountain Ave., White Sulphur Springs, with Pastor Bobby McClintic officiating. When the weather breaks, she will be interred at the Alvon Methodist Church Cemetery.
On Sunday, February 8, 2026, a memorial service for Miss Alderman will be held at the Bethel Baptist Church, 5028 Kentucky St., South Charleston, WV 25309 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, it was Dorothy’s wishes that memorial contributions be made to the Bethel Baptist Church, 5028 Kentucky St., South Charleston, WV 25309 in Dorothy Alderman’s memory.
