HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack on Wednesday presented more than $44,000 in unclaimed property funds to the Huntington Police Department in connection with the West Virginia Treasury’s November online firearms auction.
“The firearms that were sold during our last online auction include weapons that are older and no longer used by a department, or that have been seized as evidence and sitting in storage rooms for an extended amount of time. These funds will greatly benefit the Huntington Police Department and will allow them to strengthen, as well as keep their communities safe,” Treasurer Pack said. “My Office is excited to continue to hold these online auctions to help modernize our Unclaimed Property Program.”
Treasurer Pack presented $44,625 to Huntington Police Chief Phil Watkins during a check presentation Wednesday morning. Huntington Police sold 420 firearms during the November online firearms auction.
“We are grateful to Treasurer Pack for his efforts to modernize the Unclaimed Property Program,” Chief Watkins said. “Returning nearly $45,000 to the Huntington Police Department is a prime example of good stewardship. These funds, generated from the sale of 420 firearms, will be reinvested into our department’s training and equipment, directly empowering our officers to better serve the citizens of Huntington.”
Treasurer Pack recently announced the winning bid amount from the November online firearms auction was $52,500 placed from a federal firearm licensed dealer in Georgia. More than 16 bids were submitted from licensed dealers spanning across five states.
Last year, the Treasurer’s Office sold 2,347 firearms for a total of $452,073 from one in-person live auction and five online auctions. Winning bids came from federal licensed firearms dealers in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Georgia.
