WAYNE, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack was in Wayne County and Cabell County on Wednesday, January 14 to present nearly $54,000 in unclaimed property funds to the Wayne County Commission and the Cabell County Board of Education.
“I’m proud my Office was able to collect these funds and return it to the Wayne County Commission and the Cabell County Board of Education,” Treasurer Pack said. “Our local governments and county school systems do so much to promote the overall well-being of our citizens and enhance our quality of life. These funds will go toward advancing those services.”
Treasurer Pack joined Wayne County Commission President Travis Thompson on Wednesday afternoon to present an unclaimed property check, valued at $6,153.78, which came from stale dated checks and miscellaneous payments.
“It’s always good to get money especially if it’s unclaimed property. That money would’ve otherwise not gone to use for anything,” Thompson said. “It’s going to be helpful and put to good use to invest back into the community.”
Treasurer Pack then joined Cabell County Schools Superintendent Tim Hardesty later in the afternoon to present an unclaimed property check, valued at $47,748.90, which also came from stale dated checks and miscellaneous payments. Treasurer Pack previously presented the Cabell County Board of Education with an unclaimed property check worth $33,624.31 in January 2025.
“We appreciate Treasurer Pack and his office for their dedication to serving the residents and organizations of West Virginia through the Unclaimed Property Program,” Superintendent Hardesty said. “We are grateful for this funding and will put it to good use to serve the students and staff of Cabell County Schools.”
The Treasurer’s Office has more than $534 million worth of unclaimed property listings in its database. Currently, Wayne County has nearly 81,000 unclaimed property listings worth more than $7.8 million for individuals, businesses and organizations. Cabell County has nearly 235,000 unclaimed property listings worth more than $32 million for individuals, businesses and organizations.
Since the start of Fiscal Year 2026, which began on July 1, 2025, the Treasurer’s Office has returned more than $12.7 million to rightful owners.
“I want to encourage individuals and other organizations to keep checking our unclaimed property database because you never know if there may be unclaimed funds in your name,” Treasurer Pack said.
