Watching Smallpox
With health authorities and members of the medical profession in north central West Virginia prepared to combat an extensive smallpox epidemic, the West Virginia State Medical Association has issued a statement stressing the necessity of vaccination. The statement points to what happened in Montreal, Canada, 38 years ago and warns that the mild type of smallpox now prevalent may, at any time, turn into malignant form and wipe
out many lives before it can be stopped.
Virginia May Follow Tennessee
A bill making it unlawful in Virginia to teach the theory that man is descended from any form of lower animals in schools or colleges to which state funds are appropriated, has already been drafted for introduction at the coming session of the general assembly.

Typists Needed
The Department of Army urgently needs and is offering indefinity appointments to qualified stenographers at the State Employment Service in Washington, D. C. The State Employment Service office will conduct typing and stenographic tests through January 16, at their office in Ronceverte. The grades and salary for which applicants will be tested and if qualified will be offered appointment are as follows: clerk typist $2450 to $2650, clerk stenographer $2650 to $2875, the salary is per annum.
Renick Clinic
The well child clinic sponsored by the Renick Farm Woman’s club will be held January 16, from 1 until 3 o’clock. Dr. Amick and Miss Arbuckle will be in charge.
Square Dance To Benefit Polio Drive
The White Sulphur Springs Lions Club will sponsor a Square Dance, for the benefit of the March of Dimes, January 13 th at the High School Gymnasium. Legg’s String Band will furnish the music. Tickets are on sale and may be purchased from any member of the Lion’s Club. Mr. Frank Wickline is chairman of the committee.

Putnam County Pickers Coming
The Putnam County Pickers, a nationally known old-time traditional music group headquartered near Hurricane, WV, will be in concert January 24 at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg as a part of the Greenbrier Valley Arts and Humanities series.

A new food production achievement for a West Virginia Registered Holstein cow has been reported by Holstein-Fresian Association of America. The new record holder for her age group is Big-Sinks Lucky Ruba Crysta 7880128 (GP), owned by Clayborne D. and Virginia C. Campbell, Sinks Grove. The new
class leader has completed a lactation level of 24,760 lbs. of milk and 731 lbs. of butterfat in 305 days.
Sara Jane Moore Sentenced To Life
The judge who sentenced Sara Jane Moore to life for trying to kill President Ford says such violence could be avoided in the United States if there was capital punishment. Miss Moore pleaded guilty to a charge of trying to shoot Ford on Sept. 22 as he was leaving a downtown hotel. The President was uninjured, and Mis Moore was quickly captured.

Greene Named “Teacher Of The Year” In
Conservation
The Greenbrier Valley Soil Conservation District recently announced that a Greenbrier County teacher, Dan Greene, has been named “West Virginia Conservation Teacher of the Year” in the K-9 division. The honor is based in part on the partnership Greene facilitates with White Sulphur Springs Elementary School and the Greenbrier River Watershed Association. Every year Greene takes groups of students to
Howards Creek to survey the area and test water samples.
Carnegie’s Star Lab Brings Astronomy To The Students
Volunteer David Buhrman demonstrates the orbit of the earth around the sun to students at Eastern Greenbrier Junior High School before taking them into the Star Lab portable planetarium for a look at the constellations in the December night sky. The Star Lab is owned by Carnegie Hall, which makes it available for rent to school for educational outreach programs under the direction of teacher Joan McCabe.
Zackary Hunter Hudnall Wins Championship
During the West Virginia Trappers’ Association’s annual convention held at Camp Minco near Keyser, Zackary Hunter Hudnall won the title of WV State Junior Trap Setting Champion in the 11-years-old and under category. To win the award, Zackary set the required four traps in 28 seconds. Age 9, he is
the son of Steven and Faith Hudnall of White Sulphur Springs.
