LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – One of the highlights of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Lewisburg on Jan. 19 is the reading of the essays by the MLK contest winners at the Community Program beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Lewisburg United Methodist Church. The contest is still open to include entries from students in grades from kindergarten to 12th grade in Pocahontas, Monroe and Greenbrier Counties. This includes students at public schools, private schools and home-schooled students. Students may enter the contest individually or through their school.
The contest deadline has been extended to Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026. The essay winners in four categories based on grade levels will be awarded cash prizes. The winners of the artwork, in addition to the cash prize, will be acknowledged and all artwork submitted will be displayed.
The essays and drawings entered by the students will be based on each student’s choice of one of Dr. King’s fourteen quotations (https://www.nps.gov/mlkm/learn/quotations.htm) that are engraved on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC.
Other activities, in addition to the Program on MLK Jr. Day, include a March, beginning at 11:00 AM in front of the Greenbrier County Courthouse, followed by a free community lunch.
