HURRICANE, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack was in Putnam County on Monday, January 5 to present a more than $4,000 unclaimed property check to the City of Hurricane during his Office’s “Treasury Day” at Hurricane City Hall. The Treasurer’s Office found unclaimed property for 41 residents of Putnam County totaling $52,846.
“I’m proud my Office was able to collect these funds and return it to the City of Hurricane and to the people of Putnam County,” Treasurer Pack said. “Our local governments need all the help they can get so they can continue to serve their communities. Today we gave our citizens the same opportunity to put their money back to work.”
On Monday evening, Treasurer Pack joined Hurricane City Council members to present the unclaimed property check, valued at $4,400.91, which came from mostly vendor checks and refund payments.
“One person came in today and found $35,000. That’s great. I’m so happy the Treasurer’s Office does this,” Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said. “Returning money back to people? You can’t start the year any better than that. I’d tell everyone to go to the Treasurer’s website, type your name in, your wife’s name, your parent’s name, you’re grandparent’s name, and see if there’s something there to get your money.”
The Treasurer’s Office has more than $530 million worth of unclaimed property listings in its database. Currently, Putnam County has nearly 107,000 unclaimed property listings worth more than $10 million for individuals, businesses and organizations.
Last September, the Treasurer’s Office hosted its first “Treasury Day” in the City of Huntington where more than $13,000 in unclaimed property was located for 32 residents.
“I want to encourage individuals and other organizations to keep checking our unclaimed property database because you never know if there may be unclaimed funds in your name,” Treasurer Pack said.
