RONCEVERTE W.Va. (WVDN)- Meeting in their new Peoples Bank location on Monday, Jan. 5, the Ronceverte City Council held its first monthly meeting of the new calendar year on the second floor.
After touching on just a few key points, the meeting was short and sweet and lasted just about 20 minutes.
As always, the council members opened things up by approving the minutes from the December meeting.
Mayor Deena Pack gave a quick update on the Armory restoration project and said the city is working and met with the company Downstream Strategies. Bill Montgomery is leading the project and was in attendance. They are hoping to get the gym in shape to at least rent it out in the near future. The city also wants community input on what to do with the building and how to best utilize it, according to council member Leah Smith. Montgomery then spoke up and said the website has all the information about the restoration project and urged everyone with questions to email him at bmontgomery@cityofronceverte.com
The dilapidated building program is currently in the last phase. The city has been given additional funds to tear down properties, and 230 Main Street is on the list. The owner of that property has been working with the city. The property has been condemned for some time and does not have access to water currently. The city has been trying to purchase the property from the owner. To fix the water issues and tear up the road across the street would cost around $15,000. Then, the city could keep the property to do something with it or attempt to sell it. The motion was approved for the purchase to be drawn from the city’s credit line.
Ronceverte police officer Cameron Juma was in attendance and recognized for graduating from the police academy. He said, “The academy was no joke, and it doesn’t beat home here.”
Officer Larry Anderson also started on Monday at the police academy.
During the segment for council member comments, all members congratulated Juma on his graduation and council member Mark Trent said he was “excited to start a new year with momentum and good feelings.”
A student is needed for parks and rec after the month of July. They need to be at least 15 years old and live in Ronceverte. Contact Ashley Guet if interested.
Pack closed the meeting by saying thanks to the city staff for the hard work in getting the new office space ready. There is info on the bills about how to pay monthly bills, and there are drop boxes also outside bank doors.
The city is working on getting a sign on the building to make it clear where the new city hall is.
City Hall will be closed on Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The next meeting will be on Feb 2.
