CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) — The West Virginia Democratic Party expresses its deep sympathy and condolences on the passing of former Delegate Margaret Staggers, a dedicated public servant, physician, and advocate for her community.
Dr. Staggers represented Fayette County in the House of Delegates from 2006 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2020, carrying forward a proud family legacy of public service as the daughter of former Congressman Harley Staggers. Long before her service in the Legislature, she was engaged in the democratic process, serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York in 1976.
An emergency room physician who spent much of her medical career caring for patients at Beckley Regional Hospital, Delegate Staggers brought a deep commitment to public health, education, and service into everything she did. Her experience on the front lines of health care informed her work in the Legislature, where she was known for putting people first and for her practical, compassionate approach to policymaking. Among her legislative accomplishments, Delegate Staggers sponsored legislation to provide tax relief for volunteer firefighters—recognizing their selfless service and the vital role they play in keeping West Virginia communities safe.
“Margaret Staggers lived a life devoted to helping others—whether it was in the emergency room or in the House of Delegates,” said West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin. “She understood that public service is about showing up for people when they need you most. Her commitment to public health, education, and community safety left a lasting impact on Fayette County and our state.”
The West Virginia Democratic Party extends its heartfelt condolences to Delegate Staggers’ family, friends, former colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched. Her legacy of service, compassion, and dedication to West Virginia will not be forgotten.
