MAXWELTON W.Va. (WVDN) – The Maxwelton Ruritan Club ended the year with a fun and festive Christmas Dinner on Dec. 18. Lower West Virginia District Ruritan Governor Jerome Rodes and his wife, Marsha, were guests along with members and spouses.
The Women of the Henning Church of God were the special guests as they were honored for providing meals for the monthly meetings. During the event, President Bill Zink presented Terry White from Children’s Home Society with a $200 donation and items that were brought in by members. Food items for the Northern Greenbrier Food Pantry were also collected.
District Governor Rodes installed the officers for 2026: Bill Zink, President; Cari Nelson, Vice President; Bob Hefner, Treasurer; Debbie Bowman, Secretary and Brenda Wallace, Director. Club President Zink presented Debbie Bowman with the Maxwelton Ruritan of the Year.
A Year in Review for 2025 was given by Secretary Bowman and she gave some interesting facts: members volunteered over 2,000 hours in the community; donations were given to Frankford Fire Department, Greenbrier Valley Sportsmen Alliance, Greenbrier East Spartan Band for their trip to Hawaii, Central Greenbrier Little League, Clifton Presbyterian Church for new playground equipment for Mackey Park and many other deserving organizations.
Gift cards were given to the residents of the Davis Stuart Alicia McCormick House. All the donations were made possible with the public’s support by visiting the club’s ice cream concession stand during the State Fair of West Virginia. The ice cream stand is staffed by members and others who volunteer their time to make it a success. During the ten days of the Fair, 1559 milkshakes were served along with 4419 single ice cream cones and 2006 double ice cream cones. The members helped the State Fair of WV celebrate 100 years!
Participation in the Adopt A Highway netted 35 bags of trash, a mattress, a door frame, a tire, plastic car trim and a Barbie head.
The club was honored at the Lower WV District Convention with three Gold awards in Public Service, Citizenship and Patriotism and Community Engagement; Silver award for Environment and a Bronze for Social Development. Secretary Bowman was named Lower WV District Ruritan of the Year. The club appreciates the dedication of all the members and volunteers who have a heart for helping others.
The Maxwelton Club meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Henning Church of God Fellowship Hall and is currently seeking new members. You can contact the club at ldbowman84@hotmail.com and follow the Maxwelton Ruritan Club on Facebook.
