LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) — In a recent ceremony held at the Lewisburg City Council Chamber, Mayor Beverly White officially proclaimed the week of Jan. 19, 2026, as Martin Luther King, Jr. Week.
The proclamation, described as a stirring tribute to Dr. King’s legacy, draws heavily from his own words, urging the community to reject hate and embrace unity. The official signing marks the beginning of the city’s preparations for its long-standing tradition of honoring the civil rights leader.
Mayor White was joined at the signing by members of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Committee. The group is responsible for organizing the local events that bring the community together each January.
Committee members in attendance included:

Additional committee members who contributed to the planning but were unable to attend the photo session include Darren Campbell, Twana Jackson, Gibbs Kinderman, Carl Perrin, Hailey Fitzgerald and Jessica Levine.
The city-wide celebration is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 19, and features a full afternoon of commemorative activities:
11 a.m. – The March: The day begins with a public assembly at the Greenbrier County Courthouse. Attendees will participate in a march from the courthouse to the Lewisburg United Methodist Church.
Lunch – Community Fellowship: Following the march, a free community lunch will be served at the church’s Wesley Fellowship Hall, offering a space for leisurely conversation and neighborly connection.
12:30 p.m. – Commemorative Program: The celebration will move into the church sanctuary for a formal program. Early in the ceremony, Mayor White will read the proclamation to the assembled public.
All members of the community are invited to participate in the march and the subsequent program to honor Dr. King’s vision and the ongoing work of the Lewisburg community.
