Andersonville Spring
Georgia and the Southland are recovering from another severe drouth, and the famous spring of the old Andersonville prison in Sumter County has proved again that it flows without ceasing. The famous spring was started by lightening during the days of the Civil War. Thousands of Federal prisoners were dying in the Andersonville prison after a drouth had dried up virtually all the wells and small streams in the county. Burning fever spread over the camp, and there was no water to ease the suffering of the sick. The prisoners dropped on their knees and begged God to send them relief. While they were still praying a bolt of lightning struck the hillside, and the water gushed forth to cool the parched tongues of those whose prayers had been answered.
