Midland Trail Open

The State Road Commission’s Christmas present to the residents of southern West Virginia will be the completion of the Midland Trail from Huntington to White Sulphur Springs. The state bridge at Gauley Bridge is the only “missing link” in the highway as it now stands. The bridge has been completed but the concrete flooring is not thoroughly “set.” This bridge is to be formally opened Christmas day.

Greenbrier High School News

Greenbrier boys were defeated by the Alderson Collegians by a score of 10 to 18. Forced to contend with overwhelming odds from the beginning because the referee was “out of date,” there followed a “quarter” of the best football ever witnessed. As Coach Johnson could not bear to see such a scientific game as basketball harassed in such a fashion, he immediately withdrew his cohorts from the court. Thus the referee was deposed and the game continued with Coach Johnson and Coach Asbury refereeing and umpiring.

National Commander Erie Cocke, Jr., of the American Legion told a Lewisburg audience that an unrealistic foreign policy and military unpreparedness have left the U. Declaring that “we have taken a terrific beating in Korea, and we may as well face it,” Cocke said time for getting set for the final showdown with Russia is running out fast.

Church Bell Call To Prayer

The churches of Lewisburg have issued a call to prayer in the present national and world situation. The church bells are being rung each day at noon and all our people are requested to pause at that time for a moment of silent prayer. Public Library, College Consider Consolidated Facility

During Lewisburg’s City Council meeting, Bob McCormick, a representative of the Greenbrier County Public Library, which is located in Lewisburg, said a site committee was established to find a suitable place for an expanded facility. He said after negotiations fell through with the owners of the former Rite Aid building, which now houses the Dollar General Store, the committee began to look at other options. The group’s search ended when the decision was made to obtain four acres from Bluefield State College near the Greenbrier Community Center.

County Commission Pays Off Construction Debt

President Woody Hanna had the honor of presenting a check to pay off the debt for construction of the 1985 addition to the courthouse. Hanna noted that $750,000 was borrowed for the project, and said the final payment is being made 15 years ahead of the schedule outlined in the original note, and two years in advance of the payoff date designated after the loan was financed.
