Midland Trail Open
The State Road Commission’s Christmas present to the residents of southern West Virginia will be the completion of the Midland Trail from Huntington to White Sulphur Springs. The state bridge at Gauley Bridge is the only “missing link” in the highway as it now stands. The bridge has been completed but the concrete flooring is not thoroughly “set.” This bridge is to be formally opened Christmas day.
Greenbrier High School News
Greenbrier boys were defeated by the Alderson Collegians by a score of 10 to 18. Forced to contend with overwhelming odds from the beginning because the referee was “out of date,” there followed a “quarter” of the best football ever witnessed. As Coach Johnson could not bear to see such a scientific game as basketball harassed in such a fashion, he immediately withdrew his cohorts from the court. Thus the referee was deposed and the game continued with Coach Johnson and Coach Asbury refereeing and umpiring.

Commander Cocke Addresses
National Commander Erie Cocke, Jr., of the American Legion told a Lewisburg audience that an unrealistic foreign policy and military unpreparedness have left the U. S. “virtually” no hope of withstanding Communist pressure in the Far East. Declaring that “we have taken a terrific beating in Korea, and we may as well face it,” Cocke said time for getting set for the final showdown with Russia is running out fast.
Church Bell Call To Prayer
The churches of Lewisburg have issued a call to prayer in the present national and world situation. The church bells are being rung each day at noon and all our people are requested to pause at that time for a moment of silent prayer. As a nation and as a world, we face our most critical situation.
New Radio Station
The communications commission granted the Greenbrier Broadcasting Co. of East Rainelle a permit to operate a standard
radio station, with 1450 kilocycles, 250 watts, unlimited time.

School Of Nursing Begins Training
Mr. Clarence Hinkle, Superintendent of Greenbrier County Schools announces that the Region IV School of Practical Nursing recently began its first training class. The program is located in Carnegie Hall in the Greenbrier Training Center. The 12-month program is designed to prepare adults to pass the West Virginia State practical nurse licensing examinations.

Christmas readings and selections were presented as the program for the meeting of the General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Director Sam Yates, right, brought members of his Theater and Speech Department. Jane Ann Ford, from left, Louellen Cobb and Scherry McCormick who presented the program. Mrs. P. M Scott gave the president general’s message and Mrs. John Dawkins the national defense message.
Recent Bloodmobile Collects 147 Pints
At Tuesday’s Bloodmobile visit held at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg, 181 persons were in the giving mood as they registered for the last visit of the year. Mrs. Betsy Degges, county blood chairman and Rev. Wood Carper, Lewisburg blood chairman were pleased with the visit and expressed their appreciation to all those who took time from this busy holiday season to give for such a worthwhile cause.
2000 – 25 Years Ago
Public Library, College Consider Consolidated Facility
During Lewisburg’s City Council meeting, Bob McCormick, a representative of the Greenbrier County Public Library, which is located in Lewisburg, said a site committee was established to find a suitable place for an expanded facility. He said after negotiations fell through with the owners of the former Rite Aid building, which now houses the Dollar General Store, the committee began to look at other options. The group’s search ended when the decision was made to obtain four acres from Bluefield State College near the Greenbrier Community Center.
County Commission Pays Off Construction Debt
President Woody Hanna had the honor of presenting a check to pay off the debt for construction of the 1985 addition to the courthouse. Hanna noted that $750,000 was borrowed for the project, and said the final payment is being made 15 years ahead of the schedule outlined in the original note, and two years in advance of the payoff date designated after the loan was financed.
Carnegie Gets Special Delivery
Carnegie Hall received a huge Christmas package on December 18 when a Steinway grand piano was delivered by Trombino Piano Galleries of Pittsburg. The piano is a gift from Paul Underwood. It will have its performance debut on January 27 when classical pianist Barbara Nissman of Lewisburg performs a benefit concert.
WV State Fair Honored For Commitment To Agriculture
The State Fair of West Virginia received the prestigious “Outstanding Agricultural Program for the Fairgoing Public” award during the 2000 International Association of Fairs and Expositions convention in Las Vegas. “This award was won by our livestock exhibitors and superintendents, commercial exhibitors, and everyone in the agricultural industry who has a presence at the fair,” Pamela W. Edwards, public relations coordinator said.
