FAIRLEA- Five Greenbrier East Spartan football players were recently selected to the Class AAA all-state team that was announced early Thursday morning, December 11.
Leading the way was senior Kaden Stone who was effective on both sides of the ball this season but earned first team honors as a defensive back. He finished the year with 46 tackles, five interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. Three of his picks came in a Halloween night victory over James Monroe.
Senior running back AJ Godfrey solidified a spot on the second team. Godfrey ran for 954 yards and 16 touchdowns in his lone season as a Spartan and was a huge key in all Greenbrier East’s wins, including the big one at Woodrow Wilson.
Like Stone, Nate Suttle also excelled on both sides of the ball and the voters apparently felt the exact same way as Suttle was selected to the second team as a utility player. On offense, the speedy Suttle caught 43 passes for 521 yards and had seven touchdowns (one rushing) and on defense, he recorded 34 tackles, five interceptions and a score. He also had 404 kick return yards and two additional TDs.
Quarterback Brody Hamric received his third straight honorable mention selection to further prove he has been one of the more consistent signal callers the school has had. Hamric threw for 1,840 yards, 21 touchdowns, and had just five interceptions. He added three TDs on the ground as well.
Finally, senior tight end Grant Burdette capped his Spartan career beside Hamric as an honorable mention selection. He saved his best season for last and hauled in 39 catches for 552 yards and six touchdowns. Burdette was not just a safety blanket this year for his quarterback, but also a favorite target.
All the all-state selections were seniors and the WVDN wishes them all the best of luck in their future endeavors on and off the field.
