BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack was in Beckley on Wednesday, December 3 to present a more than $7,000 unclaimed property check to the Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Authority.
“I’m proud my Office was able to collect these funds and return it to the Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Authority,” Treasurer Pack said. “Our local parks do so much to promote the overall well-being of our citizens and enhance our quality of life. These funds will go toward advancing those activities and services.”
Treasurer Pack joined Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Executive Director Molly Williams on Wednesday morning to present the unclaimed property check, valued at $7,469.40, which came from a stale dated check.
“This money will go right back into our operating accounts. It will help to pay for maintenance of our facilities, to help pay for supplies, as well as staffing,” Williams said. “After talking to the Treasurer’s Office, they actually found more than what was expected, so it was a great surprise. It’s great to have the money back in our account where it belongs and we look forward to using it to maintain our parks.”
The Treasurer’s Office has more than $500 million worth of unclaimed property listings in its database. Currently, Raleigh County has nearly 155,000 unclaimed property listings worth more than $16.5 million for individuals, businesses and organizations.
Since the fiscal year began on July 1, the Office’s Unclaimed Property Division returned more than $10 million to rightful owners.
“I want to encourage individuals and other organizations to keep checking our unclaimed property database because you never know if there may be unclaimed funds in your name,” Treasurer Pack said.
