FAIRLEA- On Friday, November 28, Greenbrier East Lady Spartan guard Kennedy Stewart sat in the Spartan Gym and signed her letter of intent to officially continue her basketball career at West Virginia Wesleyan and play for the Lady Bobcats.
The senior averaged over 18 points per game last season and comes into 2025-26 with a lot of expectations not just for herself, but her team as well.
The Lady Spartans finished last year just one game shy of the Class AAA state championship game, and the general thought is they should make another run this season which begins Friday, December 5 at Princeton.
With the hope of another appearance in Charleston, Stewart is happy to get her college choice out of the way so she can focus on what’s immediately ahead.
“It relieves a bunch of stress and allows me to focus on my senior season at East,” she said.
Choosing a college destination can be tough, but once that feeling of comfort is there, it becomes a tad easier and that’s how the 38 percent 3-point shooter–in 2024-25– came to a final conclusion.
“After a few visits, Wesleyan just felt right,” Stewart stated.
“The MEC conference and Wesleyan’s central location in the conference really stood out the most to me.”
Stewart is known for knocking down shots from anywhere on the floor and her ability to create offense, and it’s those traits that the staff at Wesleyan cherish the most.
“Coach (Brett) Vincent at Wesleyan thought that my skill set would fit in well with his system as a facilitator and ball handler,” she said.
Obviously, the senior’s final year in Fairlea is the main focus right now, but looking ahead, once she arrives on campus in Buckhannon, she hopes to make the most of it early on.
“Some of my immediate goals once I get to campus will probably be to enjoy the experience and be able to contribute to the team in any way.
