WHEELING, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack today presented more than $26,000 in unclaimed property funds to the Wheeling Police Department in connection with the West Virginia Treasury’s September online firearms auction.
“These unclaimed property dollars will provide our local law enforcement agencies the opportunity to invest and strengthen their programs, as well as keep our communities safe,” Treasurer Pack said. “The people of Ohio County currently have more than 120,000 unclaimed property listings totaling over $18.5 million. My Office encourages our citizens to check our online database to see if we are holding any money for you or your family.”
Treasurer Pack presented $26,343.58 to Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger during a check presentation Tuesday afternoon at the Wheeling Police Department.
The check came from the Office’s September online firearms auction where 160 firearms were sold.
“The Wheeling Police Department has been proud to work with the State Treasurer’s Office not only to assist statewide with proper evidence storage but also with the safe and appropriate purging of evidence, including firearms,” Chief Schwertfeger said. “As noted by the Treasurer’s Office, the Wheeling Police Department turned over approximately 160 firearms to their office, helping to clear space in our evidence storage. Many of these firearms came from criminal activity and are now being safely redistributed.”
Treasurer Pack recently presented more than $2,000 to the Richwood Police Department, $24,000 to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, more than $8,000 to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office and a more than $5,000 check to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office. The winning bid amount from the auction was $130,100 placed from a federal firearm licensed dealer in West Virginia. It was the first winner from West Virginia to participate in the Office’s online firearms auction.
So far in 2025, the Treasurer’s Office has sold 2,347 firearms for a total of $452,073 from one in-person live auction and five online auctions.
