CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) — Governor Patrick Morrisey and First Lady Denise Morrisey invite all West Virginians to take part in the cherished state holiday tradition of submitting photos of loved ones who serve or served in the United States Military or as first responders. These photographs will be featured on the annual Honor Trees displayed at the State Capitol during the Christmas season.

This long-standing tradition carries a special significance for the Governor and First Lady. The First Lady’s father served in the United States Military along with her brother, who was an F-14 fighter pilot. Governor Morrisey’s father was a World War II veteran, and his mother was a Veterans Administration nurse.

This year’s Honor Trees will be placed outside the Governor’s Reception Room in the smaller rotunda. A third tree, decorated by Gold Star mothers, will stand in tribute to the strength, courage, and unwavering devotion of the men and women who serve.

“West Virginians have always understood the value of service,” said Governor Morrisey. “These photos provide us with the opportunity to honor the real heroes among us; our neighbors, our sons and daughters, our parents and friends. Each provides the courage and strength to lift our state every single day.”

First Lady Morrisey added, “As the daughter of a veteran, this tradition is incredibly close to my heart. Every photograph represents a family’s story of sacrifice and love. It is an honor to celebrate these heroes and to share their legacy with all who visit the Capitol during the holidays.”

To ensure these displays are ready for the Christmas season, photocopies of photos must be submitted by December 1.

Please note: Original photos will not be returned.
