CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – More than $13 million in state funds have been released to West Virginia food banks amid a record-long 41-day federal government shutdown. Governor Patrick Morrisey announced today another $2 million was being sent to food banks and pantries across West Virginia, bringing the total to $13.1 million.

“From the beginning I’ve said we will not let our people go hungry,” said Governor Morrisey. “No matter what happens in Washington, D.C., state government must step up and solve problems.”

Governor Morrisey has activated the National Guard to assist the food banks and provide logistical support getting emergency food resources across West Virginia.

“The best scenario for us is for the government to reopen,” the Governor continued. “We can get the cards loaded very quickly.”

Governor Morrisey urged residents to call 2-1-1 to get connected with assistance and to coordinate any food deliveries they require.

“In the meantime, we will continue being very aggressive in getting resources out to the food banks, to the food pantries, and having the Guard assist in our efforts,” Governor Morrisey concluded.
