ONA- The Greenbrier West Cavalier cross -country team capped off an outstanding season by competing as individual qualifiers at the WVSSAC State Cross- Country Championships held Saturday at Cabell Midland High School.
Facing the best runners from across West Virginia, the Cavaliers proudly represented Greenbrier West with determination and heart on one of the state’s toughest courses.
Leading the way for the Cavaliers was junior standout Jesse Walkup, who finished 28th overall in Class A with a time of 19:13.63. Walkup’s strong showing capped an impressive postseason that included standout performances at both the Coalfield Conference and regional meets.
Elijah Russell also turned in a solid effort, placing 51st with a time of 20:29.61, while Dominic Mandeville finished close behind in 55th at 20:39.68, rounding out Greenbrier West’s representation at the state level.
The Cavaliers, guided by head coach Christian Walkup, have shown steady progress throughout the fall season. Their hard work and dedication earned them the opportunity to compete on West Virginia’s biggest stage.
“This group has worked incredibly hard from the first practice to the last race,” Coach Walkup said.
“Qualifying for states is a special achievement and a reflection of their commitment to the program.”
Greenbrier West’s strong individual performances at the state meet capped a season marked by perseverance, pride, and continued improvement. With several key runners returning next year, the Cavaliers look primed to build on this year’s success and continue representing their school and community with excellence.
