KEYSER, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack today presented more than $26,000 in unclaimed property to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office, the Mineral County Board of Education, and the Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Department. A check presentation was held on Thursday on the Mineral County Courthouse steps in Keyser.
“We are continuing to return unclaimed property funds to rightful owners at the fastest pace in Office history, but there’s more work to do,” Treasurer Pack said. “The people of Mineral County currently have more than 144,700 unclaimed property listings totaling over $5.4 million. My Office encourages our citizens to check our online database to see if we are holding any money for you or your family.”
Treasurer Pack on Thursday presented $7,202.27 to the Mineral County Board of Education. The funds came from came from refunds and miscellaneous payments. A total of $10,549.39 was presented to the Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Department. Those funds came from stale dated checks.
“We appreciate Mr. Pack being here and coming to Mineral County. We always appreciate any extra funding and anything to help kids,” said Troy Ravenscroft, Superintendent of Mineral County Schools.
The check for the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office totaled $8,684.70 and came from the Treasurer’s Office’s September online firearms auction, where 44 firearms were sold.
“This program here allows us to get money back into our budget without having to go back to the taxpayers,” Mineral County Sheriff Joel Whisner said.
Treasurer Pack recently presented a more than $5,000 check to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office form the September online firearms auction. The winning bid amount from the auction was $130,100 placed from a federal firearm licensed dealer in West Virginia. It was the first winner from West Virginia to participate in the Office’s online firearms auction.
More than 25 bids were submitted from licensed dealers spanning across nine states. There were 584 firearms that came from 20 different law enforcement agencies that were up for bid.
“These online firearms auctions help modernize our Unclaimed Property Program by extending the market value of sales by securing buying power from dealers across multiple states,” Treasurer Pack said. “Safer communities are crucial to a better West Virginia. That is why we must do everything in our power to support our law enforcement agencies.”
So far in 2025, the Treasurer’s Office has sold 1,928 firearms and 600 pounds of ammunition for a total of $400,000 from one in-person live auction and four online auctions.
The next online firearms auction is scheduled for November.
