FAIRLEA- It rained, it was cold, and at times, the wind was fierce, but at the end of the evening, it was a 2-for-2 night at the Spartan pitch on Wednesday, October 29 as both the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans and Spartan boys soccer teams captured the Region III championships and punched their tickets to the state tournament next week.
The girls defeated Herbert Hoover 4-1 behind three goals from Ava Workman and another from Kiana McClung that was assisted by Workman, that opened up the scoring in the first contest. Including Wednesday’s effort, Greenbrier East has allowed just 10 goals all season and have displayed a dominant defense and an excellent offense and that was no different against the Huskies.
Husky fans screamed the entire second half and were extremely upset with the officials and felt like they were slighted, but the Lady Spartans ignored the noise, played their game, and cruised to their 19th victory of 2025.
The boys gave a similar effort in similar weather as well in their 3-0 victory over the Princeton Tigers. Andrew Holt, the all-time single leading scorer in Spartan history, scored at the 32:30 mark of the first half after a pretty crossover and long kick. That put East up 1-0. August Vincent made that 2-0 just seven minutes later as the Princeton goalie stepped up and left the net unguarded and Vincent put it right over his head.
Vincent capped the scoring with 18:50 left in the second half with another goal off an assist from Cooper Sabbag.
With about 10 minutes left, it honestly looked like the Tigers threw in the towel whether due to the weather or if they realized a loss was coming. The clock struck zero and the Spartans celebrated their Region crown.
The state tourney begins next Thursday, November 6.
The WVDN will announce the seedings and matchups when they are announced.
