CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) announced the return of the state’s fourth annual Monster Trout Contest, which gives anglers and their families an opportunity to win prizes and enjoy fishing during peak fall foliage season.

During the weeks of Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, the WVDNR will stock 40,000 pounds of trout weighing 1-2 pounds and 6,500 pounds of monster trout weighing 3-6 pounds at 41 lakes and streams around the state. Each water will receive one stocking each week for a total of two stockings. A complete list of stocking locations is available at WVdnr.gov/fall-monster-trout-stockings.

“Fall trout stockings give anglers a chance to try their luck at catching a trophy-size fish when fall color is peaking around the state,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. “We encourage anglers to take advantage of this unique opportunity with their families and friends.”

As part of this year’s Monster Trout Contest, WVDNR fisheries staff will tag 100 monster trout with a bright pink tag. Anglers who catch one of these fish, submit a photo with their catch and provide proof of the tag number online will be entered into a giveaway drawing. One lucky angler will win a one weekend-long cabin stay at a West Virginia State Park and four anglers will win a Bass Pro Shops prize package. Entries must be submitted by Friday, Nov. 21. To learn more about the contest, visit WVdnr.gov/fall-monster-trout-stockings.

WVDNR hatchery staff will be closely monitoring water conditions in scheduled rivers and streams. In areas experiencing low water levels, staff will be selective and only stock trout in deeper sections that can adequately support fish. This approach prioritizes the well-being of the fish and the success of the stocking efforts.

All anglers 15 years and older are required to have a West Virginia fishing license, trout stamp and a valid form of identification while fishing for trout. Licenses and stamps can be purchased at 160 retail locations across the state or online at WVfish.com.
