CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resource (WVDNR) announced today that physical agility tests (PAT) have been scheduled in October and November for anyone interested in applying to become a Natural Resources Police Officer (NRPO).

“Serving as a West Virginia Natural Resources Police Officer is a challenging and rewarding career that requires dedication and determination,” said Col. Bobby Cales, chief of the WVDNR’s Law Enforcement Section. “Beyond being physically fit, officers must also be self-starters, possess strong leadership skills and be able to manage stress and stay focused under pressure.”

All candidates for NRPO positions are required to pass a PAT. Upcoming tests are scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. on Oct. 25 at the Romney Wellness Center and Nov. 1 at the South Charleston Community Center.

Each applicant must complete 18 properly executed push-ups in one minute, run 1.5 miles in 14 minutes and 36 seconds, complete 28 properly executed sit-ups in one minute and swim 37.5 yards fully clothed.

Walk-ons will be accepted. Candidates should bring a change of clothes for the running test and long pants and a shirt for the swimming test. Applicants will also be required to take a written exam administered by the West Virginia Division of Personnel on Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. at the WVDNR headquarters in Charleston.

As part of the WVDNR’s Law Enforcement Section, NRPOs have full law enforcement authority statewide and are responsible for enforcing all state laws and regulations. Their primary duty is to protect West Virginia’s natural resources by preventing and addressing unlawful activities that could put them at risk.

To be considered for this position, candidates must be willing to relocate and work anywhere in the state, work various shifts and be on call. This is a statewide position, and while preferences may be considered, specific county assignments cannot be guaranteed. To learn more about NRPO job requirements, minimum qualifications and to fill out an online job application, visit WVdnr.gov/job-openings.
