Supreme Court Decision
The national prohibition laws do not forbid the home manufacture of cider and fruit juices from fruits raised on the premises and intended for individual use, the United Sates Circuit Court of appeals held when it reversed judgment of the Federal District Court at Elkins, by which Creed Isner was
convicted of possessing 70 gallons of intoxicating liquor. Isner declared he took cherries and elderberries from his farm and made fruit cider for his own use.
The Last Union Soldier?
Mr. Alexander Nichols, of Hollywood, accompanied by his son Walter, was in Union last Friday. Mr. Nichols is more than 80 years of age and served in the Federal Army in the Civil War. Is there another Federal soldier living in Monroe County? The old veteran seemed well preserved and enjoys life’s eveningtime.
Free Medical Examination By A Tuberculosis Specialist
Dr. Henry G. Wildman, specialist in the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases, will conduct clinics in Greenbrier County on Nov. 6-7, under the auspices pf the Greenbrier County Woman’s Association and the West Virginia Tuberculosis Association. The clinics will be held at the Health Center in the John A. Preston Community House, Lewisburg. These clinics are free and the service is provided from the money raised by the sale of Christmas health seals.

GMS Homecoming
Frank Field of Charleston was elected national president of the Greenbrier Military School Alumni Association at the banquet in the Greenbrier Casino. “Rocky” Holt, principal speaker, reminisced about his school days in Greenbrier, paid tribute to the late Mrs. Ida E. (Mother) Moore and said the nation needs more of the independent pioneer spirit which made this section strong. In the afternoon the GMS varsity defeated Culver Military Academy 25-2 before a crowd of old grads.
Shawnee Farms
Shawnee Farms has a surplus of registered Guernsey cattle and must sell 60 head before winter. They are offering springers,
milking cows, heifers and calves. This is a real opportunity to get some good blood in the Guernsey breed.
Three In One Family
Polio struck three children of the same Kanawha County family within three days and all now are patients in the Marmet
hospital. Since the beginning of this year, the hospital has admitted 165 children, 134 of them suffering polio.

Hundreds Gather For Dedication
Hundreds of persons gathered at Island Park in Ronceverte for the dedication of the William A. Boone Memorial, that of a beautifully constructed fountain. The fountain was a dream of Bill Boone as he had discussed and planned a similar fountain before his sudden death on March 24, 1972. Boone at the age of 26 became president of the First National Bank of Ronceverte, the youngest bank president in West Virginia.
Doctors Explain How Karen Quinlan Feels Pain
When the neurologist described how her comatose daughter Karen Ann writhes in reaction to pain, it was too much for Mrs. Julia Quinlan. Tears streaming down her cheeks, she fled the courtroom. Mrs. Quinlan was trying again to do what she could not do Tuesday – explain again why she wants Karen severed from a machine that is keeping her alive. Karen has been in a coma since April 14 when she took a combination of drugs and alcohol. Doctors say there is no chance Karen will regain consciousness, and the Quinlan family wants the machine turned off to allow her to die naturally.
Nixon Considers Being Commentator
Richard Nixon, reportedly considering becoming a broadcast commentator on international affairs, says other presidents had Watergate-style operations “much worse” than those in his administration. Nixon blames his downfall on biased liberals in the news media exaggerating “a stupid mistake” of the kind that was tolerated in other presidents.

Financial Support Sought For Child And Youth Advocacy
Center In Lewisburg
Citing an immediate need in the county, local attorney Mason Preston addressed two governmental agencies and asked them to support a proposed child and youth advocacy center in Lewisburg. He explained that there are approximately 160 cases of child abuse or neglect reported to Child Protective Services each year in Greenbrier County. He also reported that in the last year the Family Refuge Center served 265 child victims of abuse.
Mayor Says Most Employees Who Resigned Will Not Be Replaced
At the Lewisburg City Council meeting, the mayor addressed vacancies in various city departments. The issue was raised at the session by local citizen Vivian Pranulis, who voiced her concern about the loss of several employees in recent months. “We seem to be losing good people from our city hall, from our city government, she stated, adding there is a certain level of expertise those individuals took with them upon their departure. Mayor DeEtta King Hunter said five people have left the city staff in recent weeks.
Future DJ Meets Singer
Sierra Withers of Marlinton wants to be a disc jockey when she grows up, and her devotion to radio paid off. The Marlinton Elementary School student won two tickets to the Kathy Mattea concern at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg in a contest sponsored by radio station WVMR. Not only did Sierra and her mom attend the concert, they were escorted backstage after the show and met the popular singer in person.
