Charleston, W.Va. (WVDN) — The West Virginia Economic Development Council (WVEDC) appeared yesterday before the West Virginia Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Economic Development to emphasize the critical role that local economic development professionals play in strengthening communities across the state.
The presentation, delivered by WVEDC Vice President Morganne Tenney, also outlined the organization’s recently adopted policy priorities based on a survey of its more than 150 members.
The survey revealed that WVEDC members view local economic development funding, site readiness funding, and housing development as their top three priorities. Other high-priority areas identified include water and sewer infrastructure improvements and workforce development initiatives.
“Companies today are looking for communities that are ready on day one with sites, buildings, and a skilled workforce,” Tenney said. “When the state invests in local economic development authorities, it creates a ripple effect – every public dollar helps attract private investment, new jobs, and stronger communities. Local professionals know their regions best, and they’re essential partners in carrying out the state’s vision for growth.”
The WVEDC stresses that economic development work must be a collaborative effort—across local economic development authorities, regional economic development organizations and various entities in the State of West Virginia. Each entity brings essential work to locate and expand small, medium and large employers in West Virginia.
