SUMMERSVILLE- The Greenbrier West Cavalier cross country team traveled to Summersville this evening to compete at the Battle Run Invitational, a meet known for its challenging terrain and the infamous hill nicknamed “Big Bertha.”
The course tested every runner’s grit and endurance, with steep climbs and rolling paths that pushed athletes to their limits. “Big Bertha,” the long uphill stretch that greets runners late in the race, lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest features in West Virginia cross country.
Despite the demanding course, the Cavaliers rose to the occasion.
Each runner dug deep to power up the hill and finish strong, showing determination and teamwork throughout the meet. For many, just battling through “Big Bertha” was a victory in itself, but the Cavaliers managed to post competitive times against a talented field.
Head coach and teammates alike praised the group’s toughness.
“That hill will test your spirit,” one runner commented.
“But once you get to the top, you realize you can push through anything.”
The Cavaliers continue to build momentum this season, using each race as both a measuring stick and a motivator. Conquering the Battle Run course has given the team valuable experience and confidence heading into their upcoming meets. The Cavaliers travel to Westside on Saturday to compete in the Westside Invitational.
