CHARMCO- After three consecutive road games to start the season, the Greenbrier West Cavaliers finally held their home opener on Friday, September 19 when they hosted the Pocahontas County Warriors on a gorgeous evening for high school football.
In what was a tight contest throughout, the Cavs scored late on a touchdown pass from Colton Dunbar to Mason Ward that ultimately decided the game.
West scored with 5:59 left in the opening quarter when Colton Chrisman took a handoff and scooted eight yards into the end zone for a 6-0 lead. Dunbar added the 2-point run and the Cavs led 8-0 at that point.
The game was tied at 8-8 for a long time until early in the fourth quarter when Ward’s 9-yard TD catch broke it. The Warriors then scored with 2:44 left in the game, but their 2-point attempt was stuffed at the 1-yard line and Greenbrier West ran the clock out after a first down run from Dunbar and celebrated their second win of the young season (2-2).
West ran the ball for 245 yards on the night, led by Chrisman’s 121 on 28 carries. Dunbar added 117 yards on the ground and 35 through the air.
The Cavaliers will travel to Man this Friday, September 26.
