GREENBRIER VALLEY W.Va. (WVDN) – Summer at the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation (GVCF) was a busy one! Chalk full of community events, exciting new partnerships, and new funds, philanthropy was alive and well in the Greenbrier Valley.
New Funds
Perhaps one of our busiest seasons for new fund creation to date, we welcomed seven new funds to GVCF, providing scholarship assistance and support for the arts, food security, and animal care. All funds are a joy to welcome, but this season allowed us to honor some incredibly special people that contributed significantly to the beautiful life we live in the Greenbrier Valley. These new funds include:
Tina Tuckwiller Scholarship Fund
Jack Goodman Scholarship Fund
Bruce Alderman and Tommy Given Scholarship Fund
Elizabeth J. Bell Carmel Cemetery Fund
Gabriel and Agape Pet Fund
Simstone Go Forward Fund
Lewisburg Literary Festival—John and Connie Manchester Fund
It is our sincere privilege to administer each of these funds for an enhanced quality of life in our region.
Scholarships
To date in 2025, over $200,000 in scholarship funds have been distributed from the application system administered by GVCF in partnership with our regional high schools. Of that amount, around $130,000 have been funded by scholarships managed by GVCF. As always, it was a joy to attend area high schools to present certificates to these hardworking students. Scholarships are a wonderful way to remember loved ones into perpetuity and we welcome the opportunity to discuss starting scholarship funds with individuals or organizations.
Children’s Savings Account
Established in 2023, Our Future Fund was created with a mission to provide every public-school student in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas counties with a college/trade school savings account. With help from the James F. B. Peyton Fund, the H. B. Werhle Foundation, and the Friends of Ronceverte, the program was presented at Frankford, Ronceverte, and Peterstown elementaries in 2025.
Our Future Fund’s goal is to provide every child entering kindergarten with a savings account in their name; and with the support of civic, businesses, and faith groups, grow those savings for their use for further education after high school graduation. The research has demonstrated that children with a savings account are six times more likely to go to college or trade school than children who don’t have a savings account. Investment in this program is an investment into our future workforce.
In 2025, GVCF continued to focus attention on food service support in Monroe County. To support various community partners, GVCF purchased two pigs from the Greenbrier Monroe Youth Livestock Association Youth Auction at the State Fair of West Virginia. The meat was processed locally and donated to Monroe County Coalition to distribute among Monroe County food pantries and assistance programs.
Grants and Community Events
On behalf of the Williamsburg Community Fund, the Lambda Fund, the Meraki Fund, and the GVCF Community Fund, we administered an additional $36,500 in grant awards for support of community service organizations, education institutions, arts organizations, and recreational projects this summer. In additional to attending many community events, we assisted with the Fedora Cup, the Michael J. Porter Memorial Golf Tournament, and the Big Wheel Bash, all for the benefit of funds we represent.
Currently, we hold $24.7 million in over 200 funds serving Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas counties. Through those partnerships, we have provided nearly $500,000 in grants, scholarships, and fund distributions in the Greenbrier Valley in 2025 and we look forward to keeping that going through the year’s end.
