1925– 100 Years Ago

Bare Knees

We always felt a prejudice against the native Scotch costume, because the kilties exposed to view in all its naked ugliness the most unlovely portion of the human body – the knee. How others feel about it, we don’t know, but we are for the first time ready to take a smash at modern fashion, if what we have seen recently has come into vogue. We refer to the gap between the rolled down stocking and the lowermost extremity
of the new flapper’s dress exposing in pristine ugliness the female knee in naked action. One can see better mechanics on
the drive wheels of a locomotive than the bellows-like action of the flapper’s knee joints.

A Lot Of Hand Shaking

More than 45,000 persons shook hands with President Coolidge during the past year – thereby wasting energy enough to milk 10,000 cows.

Sheep Killed

Thirty sheep belonging to Mr. A. W. Arbuckle, of Maxwelton, this county, were killed by lighting on his farm last week. They were sheltering under a tree during a storm, and lightning struck the tree. They were valued at $15 a head.

Montgomery Buys Registered Ayrshire

Guy B. Montgomery of Ronceverte has recently made an initial purchase of one registered Ayrshire for his Morningside Dairy Farm. Because of their ability to produce at a low cost an abundance of milk with an average butterfat test of 4%, the Ayrshire breed of dairy cattle has become increasingly popular with dairymen throughout the country.

G. H. S. Smothers Bramwell To Open 1950 Football Season

Greenbrier High School surprised everyone at Bramwell Friday night by smothering the highly-rated Bramwell Millionaires 21- 6 in the opening game of the season. The Bulldogs showed they have great possibilities this season if injuries don’t bob up.

Watts Manufacturing

The Watts Manufacturing Company now has 97 employees working in their plant in Ronceverte, in both day and night shifts, designing and making fine store, office and bank fixtures on orders from almost everywhere.

New Thing For Skiers

When skiers go to Canaan Valley State Park this winter, they’ll be able to eat, sleep and drink at the base of the slopes. State Natural Resources Director Ira Latimer said the 250-room lodge being built at Canaan Valley should be ready for occupancy by late October or early November.

Ku Klux Klan Enters Textbook Feud

Marking a silent re-entry into Kanawha County’s text-book feud, Ku Klux Klansmen in traditional white robes demonstrated Tuesday without incident near the Board of Education office building. Two minutes after midnight Monday, firemen were called to the scene to put out a flaming cross in front of the board’s building.

Patricia Hearst Arrested, Bizarre Search Is Ended

With a cry of “Don’t shoot,” fugitive newspaper heiress-turned- revolutionary Patricia Hearst surrendered to FBI agents and ended a bizarre disappearance which frustrated U. S. law enforcement for 19 months.

2000 – 25 Years Ago

Bed Tax Approved

The Greenbrier County Commission has been wrangling with the idea of imposing a hotel/motel occupancy tax on the county’s lodging establishments for more than a year. Stunning a crowd gathered at a county commission meeting for yet another discussion of the stalled tax, the president of The
Greenbrier withdrew the resort’s opposition to the measure. Reacting quickly, the commissioners put the tax to a vote, and immediately approved a 3% tax on overnight guests at The Greenbrier.

Health Club To Be Converted Into Greenbrier Valley YMCA

Dr. Stephen Thilen, owner of the Greenbrier Health Club, has donated his facility to the YMCA. It will be known as the Greenbrier Valley YMCA, when the new ownership takes effect Gary Prince, president of the Beckley/Raleigh County YMCA said the YMCA can play a role in speeding along the process to build a new pool. The citizens of Greenbrier County have been without an indoor pool since the facility at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine closed this spring.
