PETERSTOWN W.Va. (WVDN) – The American Legion’s West Virginia 6th District Fall Conference was hosted by the Peterstown Rowe-Jones Post 145 Saturday, at the Peterstown Firehouse.
The conference brought together a vibrant cross-section of veterans to reaffirm their commitment to service, camaraderie, and community impact—a hallmark of the Legion’s enduring legacy.

George emphasized that the American Legion’s strength lies in unity – not only as veterans, but as neighbors, mentors, and advocates for the values that define the nation. His words set the tone for a day dedicated to collaboration, strategic planning, and recognition of service.
Among the highlights was a keynote address by Ed Walker, department assistant membership chair, who reflected on the evolving role of the American Legion in supporting today’s veterans. He underscored the importance of recruiting new members – membership growth and retention emerged as recurring themes throughout the meeting. Brown stressed the importance of adapting to emerging needs.
Post representatives shared their best practices, discussed local outreach efforts, and brainstormed solutions to common challenges. Topics ranged from organizing community service projects and fundraising events to strengthening youth programs like Boys State and Girls State, which cultivate leadership and civic engagement.
Speaker Aletha B Gore, Service Officer, American Legion Department of West Virginia, advised on the importance of having a spouse know where a veteran’s DD-214 is located, as it may be needed for burial benefits. In addition, she noted, it is important that a surviving spouse have information regarding accounts and passwords. Gore provided valuable information and tips regarding veteran benefits.
Members shared information about upcoming local events in their areas, including a Marine Corps Ball in Beckley in November.
