WEST VIRGINA (WVDN) – The West Virginia Democratic Party is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Walter “Walt” Helmick. Walt dedicated his life to serving the people of West Virginia, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, and commitment to the Mountain State.
A native of Pocahontas County, Helmick’s decades-long career in public service included serving on the Pocahontas County School Board, the Pocahontas County Commission, and representing his community in both the House of Delegates and State Senate for more than twenty years, and finally leading the Department of Agriculture as West Virginia’s Agriculture Commissioner from 2013 to 2017. Known for his deep knowledge of finance and agriculture, Walt was a steady hand in Charleston and a tireless advocate for rural communities across the state.
“Walt Helmick was more than a public servant—he was a true son of West Virginia who loved this state and its people with his whole heart,” said Mike Pushkin, Chair of the West Virginia Democratic Party. “He brought wisdom, civility, and a quiet strength to his work in the Legislature and as Agriculture Commissioner. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Rita, his family, and the countless West Virginians whose lives he touched. Walt’s passing is a tremendous loss for our state.”
The West Virginia Democratic Party extends its deepest condolences to Walt’s family, friends, and colleagues. Details regarding memorial services will be shared as they become available.
