WHO: Greenbrier East (1-0) at Woodrow Wilson (1-0)
WHEN: Friday, September 5, 2025- 7:30 PM
WHERE: Pete Culicerto Field at Van Meter Stadium- Beckley
LAST WEEK: GE defeated Riverside 39-27, WW defeated Washington 41-20
This Friday, Sept. 5, the Greenbrier East Spartans will play what is arguably their most important game of 2025, at least at this point. They have their biggest rivals on tap as they visit Woodrow Wilson in Beckley trying to go to 2-0 on the young season. A 2-0 start with a win over a AAAA school for the AAA Spartans would do wonders for not only Greenbrier East’s confidence, but their way too early playoff seeding as well. Beckley is coming off a 41-20 win over Washington in an impressive performance, but there may be a spot or two in the Eagles armor the Spartans can exploit.
Players to Watch for Greenbrier East:
QB: Brody Hamric- 5-of-14, 65 yds, TD– rush TD
RB: AJ Godfrey- 31 carries, 182 yds, 2 TDs
WR: Nate Suttle- 1 reception, 15 yds– kickoff return TD
LB- Brayden Brown- Fumble return TD
LB- Keshawn Bland
OL/DL- Gage Blevins
Players to watch for Woodrow Wilson:
QB: Gage Price- 13-of-18, 193 yds, 3 TDs
RB: Gage Burdette- 20 rushes, 176 yds, 2 TDs
WR: Preston Clary- 6 receptions, 126 yds, 2 TDs
WR/DB: interception on Def.–TD reception on Off.
Beckley’s Tale of the Tape:
The Eagles piled up over 400 yards of total offense in last Friday’s victory over Washington. They are led by Price, who has improved immensely since last season. In 2024, he totaled 501 passing yards when splitting time with Devin Richardson. He has already thrown for 193 this year after one week. His favorite target is Clary who can stretch the field and also take a short pass and turn it into a huge gain. Not to be forgotten is the running back, Burdette. With Price slinging the ball all over the yard, the Eagles kept the Washington defense in the secondary which opened up huge holes for Burdette. He got loose more times than not and will have to be a huge part of the defensive gameplan for the Spartans.
Outlook:
As stated above, this is a huge game for both teams. Greenbrier East can solidify themselves as a legitimate playoff contender with a win over their biggest and most hated rival and though it may not seem like it, 2-0 is a big difference than 1-1. Woodrow’s defense allowed 324 yards to Washington in week one (184 passing, 124 rushing) so Beckley’s defense has some holes. If given time to throw, Hamric could have a bigger game and guys like Grant Burdette, Kaden Stone, Jy Green, and Suttle could be the recipients of that as well.
Also, not to be overlooked, Washington’s quarterback ran for 55 yards and their running back scooted for 78. Running lanes will be there for East and when they are, they have to take advantage and look for the Spartans to feed Godfrey the ball again similar to week one.
East’s defense must stay true to their assignments and not let Ga. Burdette get loose around the edges.
Van Meter Stadium will be packed, loud, and unfriendly to the Spartans in hopes of taking them out of their game. It is going to be a terrific atmosphere for an early season high school matchup and most likely, one of the best in the entire state for week two.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
