PLEASEANT VALLEY W.Va. (WVDN) — The West Virginia Pepperoni Roll Trail has expanded and now features popular local varieties from Tucker, Monongalia and Greenbrier counties.
The Marion County Convention and Visitors Bureau teamed up with the Clarksburg Visitors Center in April to release the WV Pepperoni Roll Trail, a special initiative directing folks to visit local bakeries to earn points and collect prizes.
The trail includes original places like Country Club Bakery, Tomaro’s and Colasessano’s. After receiving community input, the trail will now include stops in Morgantown, Thomas and Lewisburg with Chico Bakery, Mountain Top Convenience and The Humble Tomato, respectively.
Chico Bakery is a family-owned bakery that has been part of the West Virginia community for over 100 years.
“This trail gives visitors the opportunity to experience a true taste of our region’s heritage,” Steve Bowen, Chico sales manager, said. “We’re honored to have Julia’s Pepperoni Rolls featured on the Pepperoni Roll Trail.”
Mountain Top Convenience stays true to the character of the pepperoni roll and offers a convenient grab-and-go roll. They also stray from tradition and created the PBR: pepperoni, bacon and cheddar; or pickle, bacon, ranch, cheddar.
The Humble Tomato provides another unique take on the pepperoni roll. They’ve taken a coal mining tradition and made it fancy, elevating it with parmesan cheese and a house-made marinara sauce.
“[The Humble Tomato] has a distinct Italian flavor and is baked to a golden brown … Perfection!” Beth Gill, director of marketing for Experience Greenbrier Valley, said.
To experience all the variations, travelers and locals can register to participate in the WV Pepperoni Roll Trail online and instantly receive the digital passport via email or text. Once downloaded, visitors can check in to bakeries around the state to earn points and unlock exclusive Pepperoni Roll Trail prizes – including an official sticker, food baggie and lunch tote.
