FAIRLEA- Fall sports officially got underway in Fairlea on Friday night, Aug. 22 when the Greenbrier East boys and girls soccer teams took the field in front of a large fanbase who were eager to watch some sports again.
The boys were up first and defeated the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers in shutout fashion, 4-0 then the Lady Spartans finished off the nightcap with a dominating 9-1 victory over the Shady Spring Tigers.
Boys:
The Spartans really controlled the first half as they did not allow Buckhannon-Upshur to get in any kind of rhythm, meanwhile, East senior Andrew Holt was taking advantage with the ball in his control.
After going up 1-0 on a goal from Carson Black that was assisted nicely by Paul Kucera, Holt scored two consecutive goals to put East up 3-0. The first score for Holt came from a long lead pass up the field from Kucera which Holt faked out the goalkeeper and scored rather easily. August Vincent assisted to Holt on his second goal as the Spartans teamwork was in midseason form.
The Bucs got a couple early shots at the goal in the second half, but one play in particular stood out just five minutes into the second half when Dubya Vickers laid out and stop a kick towards the front of the goal in which he knocked the ball back and forced Buckhannon-Upshur to reset their offense.
Finally, with 17:40 remaining in the contest, Vincent scored off an assist from Corbin Long and the Spartans sealed the clean sheet win.
The boys will host Martinsburg Saturday.

Girls:
After falling behind 1-0 early, the Lady Spartans simply toyed with the Tigers from Shady.
Junior Kiana McClung got the scoring started for the Spartans with just three minutes in with a goal from the front of the net. Then, just 24 seconds later, Ava Workman, on the soccer field in any kind of live action for the first time since last season, stole the ball from a Shady player and kicked it through the net for a 2-1 East lead.
Then, everyone got familiar with the names Workman and Lyla Brown. Brown, a freshman transfer from the western end of the county, scored four of the next five Spartan goals for a 7-1 advantage. The other goal came from Workman with 31:39 left in the first half. On Brown’s final score, she was assisted by Workman on a nice pass from the side of the net. Workman then capped the first half scoring with a long kick into the goal as the Lady Spartans held a huge 8-1 lead at the break.
Izzy Russell scored the lone goal in the second half for the Spartans.
East plays Jefferson on Saturday morning, August 23 at 11:00 AM.
