CHARLESTON W.Va. (WVDN) – In a groundbreaking collaboration between athletics and the arts, Charleston’s own American Academy Ballet, the official school of the Charleston Ballet, is hosting the University of Charleston’s football team for a series of ballet-based conditioning classes in preparation for the upcoming season.

The five-class series, held throughout August, is designed to improve strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and mental focus; all key elements in both ballet and football performance. The initiative aims to support the Golden Eagles as they gear up for their first game on August 28.

Led by Artistic Director Kim R. Pauley, the sessions integrate core ballet concepts into athletic training. Ms. Pauley is joined by Charleston Ballet company dancers Megan James and Alexis Staun, who are assisting in delivering the unique curriculum.

“Ballet is one of the most physically demanding art forms, and it builds refined motor skills and flexibility in ways that directly benefit athletes,” said Pauley. “We’re excited to work with the University of Charleston’s football team to help them condition both body and mind ahead of their season.”

“I’m truly honored to partner with Ms. Pauley and the American Academy Ballet to offer our athletes a unique and valuable experience,” said Coach Thompson. “Exploring new ways to enhance flexibility and movement is essential for excelling at the receiver position. This collaboration pushes our players beyond their comfort zones and makes them better athletes. I look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come. Be sure to catch the Golden Eagles in action this fall, starting with our home opener on August 28 at 7 p.m. against Livingstone College at UC Stadium.”

The partnership highlights an innovative approach to cross-training, with ballet offering a new avenue for improving agility and sharpening discipline on and off the field.

The collaboration between two of Charleston’s own institutions, the American Academy Ballet and the University of Charleston, both representing the city’s spirit of community, creativity, and excellence.
