MILTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW), traveled to Milton, where she attended an event to mark the signing of an amendment to the Lower Mud River flood control project partnership agreement (PPA) by the State of West Virginia and the City of Milton needed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Army Corps) to continue implementation of the project. Chairman Capito was joined at the signing event by Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Adam Telle, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, Congresswoman Carol Miller, and Milton Mayor Shane Evans.
“West Virginians across this region of our state know how needed the Lower Mud River flood control project is, and how this effort will protect our residents and make our communities along the Mud River more resilient. That is why I have worked for years to secure necessary funding and increase the federal cost share for the project from 65% to 90%. Today’s agreement marks a central milestone in our years of work alongside the Army Corps and city and state officials to get the Lower Mud River project completed and make this support a reality for our communities,” Chairman Capito said.
BACKGROUND:
The signing of the PPA memorializes the increased federal share of project costs from 65% to 90% that Senator Capito secured as part of the Water Resources Development Act of 2022. In March 2023, Senator Capito visited the site of the Lower Mud River flood control project after she secured an additional $190 million from Army Corps to support constructing a levee and other measures to help ensure the long-term safety and prosperity of employers, workers, and residents in the area.
