CHARLESTON W.Va. (WVDN) – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) Office of Adult Education announces a significant expansion of International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) course offerings through West Virginia Public Service Training (WVPST). The WVDE funds and provides oversight of the WVPST, the administrative arm of public service training for West Virginia’s emergency responders.
The IFSAC accredits fire service personnel, emergency services professionals and post-secondary programs internationally, ensuring training aligns with the rigorous standards of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These credentials validate professional competency and offer critical benefits, including career advancement and reciprocity with other states.
West Virginia is a national leader in the number of courses approved for certification. With the recent expansion, the number of certified courses has nearly quadrupled to 39. WVPST has issued 2,383 IFSAC certificates in fiscal year 2025.
By supporting this growth in IFSAC certifications, the WVDE is reinforcing its dedication to workforce readiness and aligning with national standards in public service training. This achievement also highlights the impactful work of the WVDE Office of Adult Education in preparing individuals for high-skill, high-demand careers.
“West Virginia is proud to provide resources and educational opportunities to meet the critical need for essential public servants and others,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “The safety and health of our communities are a responsibility we all must share. Ensuring emergency personnel are fully trained and qualified keeps us all protected.”
WVPST, in partnership with the West Virginia Army National Guard’s (WVANG) Army Interagency Training and Education Center, has enhanced services and elevated the quality of education delivered to first responders statewide. Additionally, it delivers IFSAC-accredited training in 25 states and Puerto Rico, with participants ranging from military to fire department personnel seeking nationally recognized credentials. This expansion reflects the continued commitment to serve a broad range of learners and professionals in West Virginia and beyond.
