CHARLESTON, W.V.a (WVDN)- If you haven’t tuned in to the TBT (The Basketball Tournament) yet, you may want to start and that’s because Best Virginia, mostly a WVU Mountaineer alumni team, are 3-0 and won the regionals on Tuesday night over the no. 1 seed Elite Nation 79-68 at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
After narrowly scraping by Dubois Dream in the first round, then handling Herd That (Marshall alumni team) in round 2, Best Virginia plummeted the region’s top team in typical Mountaineer fashion; hard work, toughness, and determination.
After surviving the hot-shooting Rashad Vaughn, a former UNLV star who was a first-round NBA Draft pick, BV turned up the defensive intensity, knocked some shots down, and slowly drove the nail through Elite Nation’s proverbial heart.
James Reese V led Best Virginia with 24 points including the game winning shot in the Elam Ending scenario. Kedrian Johnson scored 17 and played the tight defense he was always known for in Morgantown, JD Weatherspoon had 16, and former Mountaineer and Kentucky Wildcat Tre’ Mitchell added 11.
With the upset win, Best Virginia moves on to the quarterfinals–basically like the elite eight– and will get to remain in Charleston to play it. They will face a Maryland alumni team, Sheel Shock, on Monday night, July 28 at 6:00 PM.
The crowds in Charleston have been pretty good for the first three games, but next week, it is expected to be even bigger.
The winning team of the TBT gets to split one million dollars between their players and coaches.
Former Mountaineers on the team are Johnson, Mitchell, Toby Okani, Eduardo Andre, Wesley Harris, and John Flowers.
